Choline is a nutrient that helps with many bodily functions, including:
Brain and nervous system: Regulates memory, mood, and muscle control
Cell membranes: Forms the membranes that surround cells
Liver health: Transports lipids from the liver
Prenatal development: Supports brain development, neurotransmission, and gene expression
Choline is found in many foods, and the liver also produces a small amount. However, most people don’t get enough choline from their diet. The Food and Nutrition Board recommends that adult women get 425 mg of choline per day, and adult men get 550 mg.
Some studies suggest that choline may help with weight loss by helping the body break down proteins and carbohydrates more efficiently. This can increase metabolism, provide an energy boost, and help burn fat more effectively during exercise.
