Celiac Disease (also known as celiac sprue or gluten sensitive enteropathy) is a chronic digestive and autoimmune disorder that damages the small intestine. The cause is unknown. According to the National Institutes of Health, 2 million people in the United States have celiac disease.

Obesity can make celiac disease worse because it can lead to a delayed diagnosis and more disease progression.

Most people who have Celiac disease don’t know they have it; and then there are those who don’t have it but still can’t tolerate gluten. I meet these folks because, unfortunately, many gluten-free products are way higher in calories and refined carbs (sugars) than their gluten form. Thus, slim people diagnosed with Celiac often start putting on weight when they start eating gluten-free; and overweight people with Celiac often start to gain more weight.

It is possible to eat right, eat well AND enjoy it . . . AND lose weight if you have Celiac disease. Don’t use it as an excuse to not get to and maintain a healthy weight.
