Vitamin D is an important nutrient that helps the body absorb calcium (and regulates it in the blood), which is essential for maintaining strong bones and teeth. And when it comes to your bones, Vitamin D and calcium aren’t only essential to prevent fractures but also to help fracture healing. Additionally, low levels of dietary calcium and dairy products increase the risk of hypertension and decreased insulin sensitivity.
Because it’s a fat-soluble vitamin, obesity can (and usually does) cause a deficiency in vitamin D; this is likely because one’s daily requirement for D depends on body size. Most of my obese clients are prescribed D supplements by their physicians.
Here’s a reference sheet I provide to clients to help them incorporate more calcium foods into their diet.
