Obesity and Breast Cancer: Post- and Pre-menopausal

When a fat woman is 𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑡-menopausal, her ovaries have stopped producing estrogen, but she still produces it in her fat tissue — where androgens (male hormones), made primarily in the adrenal glands, are converted to estrogen.

When a fat female is 𝑝𝑟𝑒-menopausal, she gets a double-dose of estrogen — from her ovaries and her fat.

Facts:

📌 More fat = more estrogen produced.

📌 Estrogen fuels tumor growth. The more a woman feeds her fat cells, the more she feeds any cancer cells, the more aggressive the cancer.

High levels of post-menopausal estrogen can stimulate abnormal breast cell growth, which leads to more rapid development of estrogen-positive breast cancers.

For many women with breast cancer, standard care is estrogen inhibitors or blockers, such as the drug tamoxifen, to minimize estrogen in the body because of its relationship to cancer. The effectiveness of these drugs is compromised, however, by higher estrogen levels in women with higher body fat. Imagine, taking a pill with one hand to minimize negative effects of estrogen; while using the other hand to continue eating the same crap that made her fat to produce more estrogen!

That’s why obese women who’ve had breast cancer are at the highest risk for recurrence.
