If you’re carrying around excess fat, have you ever given thought to the fat that has built up on the inside of your throat?
The extra bulk in this area partially blocks your airway all day, and when you sleep, the extra fat tissue puts pressure on the structures of the throat. This leads to further constriction.
Further:
1️⃣ The weight of excess internal and excess body fat saps the strength from your muscles.2️⃣ All of the tissues in the throat become softer when you’re overweight.
Therefore, when you add softened tissues and loose muscles to partial blockage and extra pressure on the airway, you’re almost guaranteed to snore.
A little snoring here and there never hurt anyone, but obesity and snoring is a dangerous combination. It leads to Obstructive Sleep Apnea, which causes your body to stop breathing during sleep.
So just remember: If you are over-fat, so is your throat.
. . . and, by the way, this is just one of many reasons why surgery on obese patients presents problems in the operating room. Obesity changes the anatomy of the throat, presenting a challenge to even the most talented and experienced anesthesiologists!
