We’re all familiar with unhealthy fear, the kind of fear that causes us to stagnate and that becomes a disruptive part of our lives. The root of it is irrational and, instead of taking action to avoid an unpleasant circumstance, it literally paralyzes us from moving forward at all. We become stuck.

There are, however, many ways in which fear is healthy, useful and good.

✅ Fear of falling, for example, will stop us from stepping out of a window of a ten-story building.

✅ Fear of losing those we love may remind us to be more attentive and spend more quality time together.

✅ Fear of not being able to pay our bills motivates us to show up to our jobs every day.

✅ Fear of disease will (should!) encourage us to live a healthier lifestyle, maybe quit smoking, begin exercising, losing weight.

So, healthy fear keeps us alert and motivated. It helps us to make appropriate decisions for our lives, to slow us down a bit and think about what is best, and to take action to avoid real danger.
