Cholesterol, “Good” and “Bad”

You’ve heard the terms “bad” or “good” cholesterol but, in reality, all cholesterol is good!

 

The soft, fat-like, waxy substance found in the bloodstream and in your body’s cells, is vital for our existence in many ways, especially as one of the main building blocks used to make cell membranes. Every cell in our body is surrounded by a membrane, and these membranes are largely responsible for fluidity and permeability, which essentially control how a cell moves, how it interacts with other cells, and how it transports “important” things in and out.

 

Cholesterol can’t dissolve in the blood; it has to be transported to and from the cells by carriers called lipoproteins.

 

😈 Low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, is known as bad cholesterol.
😇 High-density lipoprotein, or HDL, is known as good cholesterol.

 

A “bad” outcome is when cholesterol ends up inside the wall of an artery and leads to an inflammatory cascade of events which results in the obstruction of that artery, a major risk for coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke.

 

Here’s a tip to help remember good and bad cholesterol:

 

☹️ 𝐋 is for 𝐋𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐲 . . . so LDL is bad
🙂 𝐇 is for 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 . . . so HDL is good
