Process vs. Outcome Goals

When setting goals and planning for change, whether in business or in our personal lives, we must make sure we avoid a common trap. Most people set goals that help them visualize the result. They describe what they want. They SEE what they want. ⠀

The biggest reason people miss their goals, however, especially weight loss and fitness goals, is because they are not able to attach that desired outcome to the necessary process. In other words, they understand what they want to achieve but not how they are going to achieve it. ⠀

The HOW part is much more crucial than any other element. ⠀

Once you have the HOW in place (the tools, the resources, the structure, the guidance . . . aka “the process” or “the system”), you’ve got to control it 100%. You’ll eventually get the outcome. And if there’s a time or two or three along the way when you can only control 75% or 50%, well . . . you’ve just got to control 100% of that 75% or 50%. ⠀

Outcome goal: Hoping and praying something happens. ⠀

Process goal: Taking specific steps to make something happen. ⠀

I get this process vs. outcome message across to my clients repeatedly. Every day.
