Is walking the best exercise for obese individuals?

Considering the impact other exercises may have on the joints, yes, I believe walking is the best exercise.

Walking slowly will burn additional calories when you’re carrying extra weight because you’re exerting more energy to move your body. For the morbidly obese, however, or even those who are overweight but already suffering with feet, hips and joints problems, walking may be difficult.

For those folks, one of the easiest and most effective ways to ease into a healthier lifestyle is to exercise in the water. Water helps to support your body weight, which makes you feel lighter. It also reduces the impact on your joints, which means that the pain you might feel in your hips or knees from walking on land is virtually nonexistent when you stand in the water.

It’s a start, it gets you moving, it’s social.

If I’m in a discussion with an obese client who doesn’t exercise or partake in any fitness activities at all, I always suggest they at least consider visiting the closest fitness facility that has a pool. Most pool facilities offer group fitness classes, or private one-on-one instruction, and almost all of them invite you to check out a class for free.
